Week 2 - Wrapping Up and A Day at the Beach

This week, I was able to get a better feel for what Web2.0 means in the workplace and a better grasp on the "why?" of EME6414. Reading the material, discussing ideas with classmates, chatting with my work colleague, and reflecting on my own experience helped me understand my own perspective a bit more. After working in an office for seven years, using the same tools we use for remote work, I was pleased to finally have the work-from-home experience. Now that I've done that for over a year, it surprises me that there isn't a bigger push for more at-home bit work. I think my team at work are all capable of maintaining a strong network because our field requires knowledge of digital tools, but also because we value the knowledge we share. We can facilitate sharing that knowledge through the tools we use i.e., Slack, Microsoft Teams, etc.

I reflected a bit about what I learned this past week on the drive home from St. George Island on Sunday. SGI is one of my favorite places and I'm happy that I have an opportunity to go there whenever I want. The future age dream of not-too-long-ago was an image of a networked person sitting on a beach chair, drinking out of a coconut, with laptop on checking emails or on a conference call. Now I realize I'm closer to that dream becoming reality than ever before. It just took a global pandemic and the thriving of remote work in a tough time to get there.

  1. I feel like everyone was at SGI this weekend! I was there on Saturday. Funny you mention the image of a networked person. I traveled to Little Gasparilla Island a few months ago which is an island only accessible by boat/ferry and has no cars or stores. I ran into someone who worked on west coast time and had been living on the island (pre-pandemic) and seemed to be living the remote life. He didn't have to start working until 11am and was sort of that epitome of working from the beach with a coconut drink. Since I also had been working remotely for the past year, it made me question if I had been truly living the remote experience or not! The world of work is certainly changing and digital tools are helping employees realize the full potential.
