Week 7 Bonus - Check out Edublogs

 While exploring the tools for this week, I experimented with edublogs.org and set up a blog for myself: 

https://aq09d.edublogs.org/ 

I really like this blogging tool! I'm used to Blogger at this point and still appreciate its simplicity, but the edublogs tool has more options for teachers to moderate class blogs. Creating a new post contains many options for customizing and embedding content. The themes are interesting and look clean. I highly recommend my classmates to try it out!

Currently, I'm thinking about how I can set up a blog for users of my center's professional development courses. Maybe I can set up a blog for each course and have course participants post there as they take the class? Perhaps other educators will respond and engage in the comment sections. There are a lot of possibilities here!

Wrapping Up!

  As promised, here's my final blog post of the semester. I used my drop weeks and tokens to save me extra work during these last few weeks, so this is purely a post for my own satisfaction. I wanted to say how much I enjoyed this class, and that I thought the semester went smoothly. This was my third semester in grad school and my third semester participating in online learning. In previous classes, I felt constrained by deadlines, discussion requirements, and homework. At times, I felt like remote school was dictating how I structure my week. With this class, it was all different. Being able to work when I want and wrap it all up in a participation log felt liberating, and it is the way other online classes should work. If I had to complete all the work for the week on a Saturday, I could without penalty. Week 9 - Finding Inspiration in Each Other, Online

  I went in to this week not knowing at all what I was going to plan for our last two assignments. ASSIGNMENTS . When I see that word, all I see is work. The assignment submission must hit all the assessment points, line up with the rubric, be expertly formatted and polished, and just be overall perfect. Assignments and big projects are something we're all used to after being in school for so long, but they still appear to be mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome.  I love to hate this feeling and hate that I love it. After all, if I really hated assignments I wouldn't be in grad school. So obviously I love the torture. But EME6414 is the first class in which I haven't felt that big projects are torturous. These assignments are not asking the world of us, they are not asking us to compile 5-10 sources and use them for research papers, they are not asking us to do anything that is above and beyond what many of us already do–be online. Week 10 - Budding Online Activists

  This week's readings about digital activism gave me a lot to think about. These days, I get most of my news from web 2.0 sites such as Reddit and Twitter. My phone is almost always with me and I'm able to check my sites quickly and in short bursts. Not long ago, from 2005 to about 2012, I got most of my news from The Daily Show. This isn't really an exaggeration, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart entranced a whole lot of us in those days. It seemed that traditional news outlets, especially the big cable news companies, could not be trusted. The irreverent humor combined with sincerity and thoughtfulness in TDS showed us that being informed didn't mean being bored.  The height of my fandom of The Daily Show saw me and my college roommates drive 872 miles north from Tallahassee to Washington, D.C. to attend the Rally to Restore Sanity in 2010.
